A Proper Outdoor Space — Kandla Grey Sandstone Patio, Hereford
Transforming an Outdoor Space with a New Patio in Hereford
When we turned up to this job in Hereford the clients had 8 square metres of tired basic paving outside their French doors. That was it. The garden gets a great run of sun across it and they were barely using any of it because there was nowhere to actually sit out.
Creating a new patio can completely revitalize the area, making it an inviting place to relax and enjoy the sun.
It’s one of those situations where the fix is obvious. The space just needed proper attention.
What They Were After
They wanted more space and they wanted to make proper use of the sun the garden gets. Nothing overcomplicated, just a patio that was actually big enough to use and looked the part next to the house.
The old paving came up. It wasn’t worth keeping and it wasn’t big enough to build around so we started from scratch.
The Stone
We put in Kandla Grey sandstone once again from our trusted supplier Talasey . For a garden that catches good sunshine it is a solid choice. It is a natural Indian sandstone with a blue grey tone to it. In direct sunlight it looks clean and sharp. It does not bleach out the way lighter stones do and it works well alongside a red brick house without clashing with it.
We took the patio from 8 square metres up to 20. More than double the original size. That kind of increase changes the whole feel of the space. There is now room for a table and chairs, room to move around them, and the French doors actually open onto something worth stepping out onto.
How We Laid It
The groundwork comes first and it has to be right. A sandstone patio is only as good as the base underneath it. Get that wrong and within a couple of seasons you will have movement, puddles and lifted slabs. We see the results of cut corners on that regularly when we are called out to fix other people’s work.
We excavated to the correct depth, compacted the sub-base properly and built the right falls in so water drains away from the house. The Kandla Grey went down in a mixed coursed pattern using varying slab sizes rather than a uniform grid. It gives a more natural look and suits the character of the stone better.
The white gravel border along the base of the wall keeps the patio edge clean and stops soil sitting against the brickwork. A small detail but it makes a difference to how the finished job looks and it protects the wall long term.
How It Turned Out
Twenty square metres of Kandla Grey sandstone opening straight off the French doors. The clients can actually use the garden now and they are making the most of the sun rather than watching it from inside.
It looks like it was always meant to be there. That is what a good patio installation should look like.
